BS9251:2021 System Categories

These categories represent typical applications, though system specification may vary based on building use, layout, and occupancy type:

  • Category 1: Single-family dwellings – compact systems with at least 10 minutes of fire suppression.

  • Category 2: Low-rise flats (under 18m) – extended protection offering 30 minutes of suppression.

  • Category 3: Residential care homes – high-performance systems capable of supporting up to four sprinkler heads.

  • Category 4: High-rise buildings (18m and above) –dual-tank systems with 60 minutes of continuous fire suppression and system Enhancements.

Fire Sprinker Head Types

Sprinkler Heads

Concealed Fire Sprinkler Heads

These are by far the most popular choice among homeowners—and for good reason. Concealed fire sprinkler heads blend seamlessly with interior décor, remaining virtually invisible until a fire occurs. They operate on a two-stage mechanism.

As heat rises, the first stage activates: the white ceiling cover plate detaches (due to the heat-sensitive solder melting) and falls away, allowing the deflector plate to drop just below ceiling level. If the temperature continues to rise, the sprinkler itself is triggered, initiating the second stage.

Traditional Pendant Sprinkler Heads

These are seldom used in residential settings due to their more noticeable appearance. Unlike concealed options, traditional pendant sprinkler heads expose the system’s mechanics, which often clash with modern interior styles. They release water in a conical spray pattern via a convex deflector. Unlike concealed heads, pendant sprinklers remain visible after installation.
